Shadows stretched/Twisted and writhed/Danced ominously like living things, clutched/grasped/enveloped by the heavy/suffocating/oppressive darkness that had claimed this place long ago.

A sense of unease/dread/horror settled over me as I stepped/entered/crossed the threshold, my flashlight/lantern/candle casting a narrow/wavering/flickering beam that did little to penetrate the all-consuming/enveloping/total darkness. Every creak/ groan/whisper of the ancient/crumbling/rotted structure sent a shiver down my spine, and I couldn't help but feel like I was being watched/observed/stalked by unseen eyes.
